Healthy Snacks for Roadtrip

Ladies, how many times have you went on a road trip only to find yourself surrounded by bags of chips, candy bars, and stopping at fast food places (Ahh yes, even Panera…which is better than other fast food places, but still not the best, hate to break it to ya!)? But I know, because I've definitely been there! The roadtrip snacks we often associate with road trips are usually processed, packed with sugar, and leave us feeling sluggish.

As a mom of two young boys and a functional nutritionist, I know how important it is to fuel our bodies with nutrient-dense foods, especially when traveling. So, for our upcoming 9-hour road trip from Pennsylvania to Charleston (heading out tomorrow around 4am!), I've thought it was the perfect time {to procrastinate my final packing} to share some of the healthy roadtrip snacks I'm packing for my family.

Why Healthy Roadtrip Snacks?

Even on vacation, I love to prioritize my healthy and my family’s health. The thing about most road trip snacks is they are full of junk that makes you feel like crap. And let's be honest, nobody wants to feel like crap on vacation! Bloated or dealing with a sugar crash while on vacation (especially when you gotta keep up with kiddos!)…NOT FUN!

I believe that we should pack healthy roadtrip snacks and foods that make us feel great, especially when traveling. Dealing with travel-related issues like constipation, dehydration, or headaches can ruin any vacation. And while I'm not against some vacation treats (we sure will have some ice cream nights), it's key that treats aren't your ONLY fuel, right? I did make a big batch of green juice from our overgrown garden to bring along…call me extra but I love prepping healthy food to bring along!

The Top 10 Healthy Roadtrip Snacks

With that said, here are my top 10 healthy roadtrip snacks that will keep you feeling energized and satisfied throughout your travel adventures!

healthy Road trip snacks

Chomps Meat sticks: These are a great source of protein and keep you feeling full longer. My boys will eat these once in a while but my husband and I love these are so I packed a good handful of these sticks. Epic Meat Sticks are also a good choice!

Organic cheese sticks: Another excellent source of protein, and who doesn't love cheese?

Apple sauce/carrot pouches: These are fantastic for kids (and us adults), and they're a great way to get some fruits and veggies in. I found some at Trader Joes and thought I’d get the ones with some sneaky veggies in them. why not?

Hard-boiled eggs: A protein powerhouse that's easy to pack and eat. I boiled a carton of backyard eggs from my moms chickens 2 days ago. Whatever we dont eat in the car, we can eat on vacation as a healthy snack!

Washed grapes or carrots put in baggies: These are refreshing snacks that help keep you hydrated. I prep them by washing them up and putting them in small baggies to easily hand back to my kiddos or one big bag then they have cups and I fill their cups with whatever snack they are asking for every 10 min…

Protein date balls: These are packed with energy and are a great alternative to sugary snacks. They totally hit the spot when you need something in your belly. Okay these did take some prep time but oh my goodness… they are WORTH IT! Here is the recipe link. I always doubled my original recipe because we eat them up so quickly, so now my main date ball recipes has the bigger servings :)

Easy-to-eat fruit like bananas, apples, and mandarin oranges: These are nature's fast food and are packed with essential vitamins. can’t go wrong with these guys.

Organic raw nuts: These are full of healthy fats and protein and are incredibly satisfying. My kids love cashews the most. But I usually pack a combo of Brazil, walnuts, cashews and almonds.

Lesser Evil popcorn (sea salt and coconut oil): This is a healthier alternative to regular popcorn and honestly my FAV popcorn of all time. Im a huge popcorn snob and when I tried this brand I was in HEAVEN! they use coconut oil (non-inflammatory oil) which makes it taste too freaking good!

Organic rice cakes: These are light, easy to pack, and can be paired with almost anything. They are a bit crummy so just warning you now if you have small rabbits in the back seat…
